Iraq: The Road Ahead

II. Sajad

Sajad Lafta, 5, grew up in al-Dujel a village north of Baghdad, Iraq. In 2008, he lost his left leg and two of his older brothers in a car bomb explosion. The Global Medical Relief Fund, a Staten Island-based non-governmental organization run by Ms. Elissa Montanti, arranged for Sajad and his mother to travel to the U.S. in January 2009. The organization sponsored and funded their trip, and provided Sajad with access to critical medical treatment and a new prosthetic leg. After receiving life-changing care and physical therapy, Sajad and his mother returned home to al-Dujel in April 2009.
